Camden and Sweetheart: First Day as Humans

In the middle of a strange, glowing forest, Camden and Sweetheart blinked awake. For as long as they could remember, they had been… well, something else. Not exactly human. Not exactly anything normal. But now, they felt the soft pull of gravity differently, heard their own breaths, and noticed their hands—real, fleshy hands.

“Uh… Camden?” Sweetheart whispered, looking at her own reflection in a puddle. “Are we… humans?”

Camden wiggled his fingers like he was testing for bugs. “Looks like it. And wow… these feel weird. And warm.”

They stood up, shakily at first. Camden stumbled over a tree root and almost faceplanted. Sweetheart giggled, holding her arms out like she might float away. “I feel… slow. But also kind of cool?”

As they explored, they discovered the little wonders of being human: the crunch of leaves under their feet, the taste of fresh berries, the tickle of wind on skin. Camden found himself fascinated by how heavy his backpack felt on his shoulders now that it actually had weight. Sweetheart laughed when she realized she could smell the flowers nearby—and wasn’t that smell really strong?

But being human wasn’t just fun and games. They quickly learned the struggles: tripping over their own shoelaces, burning toast, and arguing about who got to use the single bathroom first. “This is harder than I thought,” Camden groaned, brushing a berry stain off his shirt.

Sweetheart smirked, tossing him a berry. “Welcome to humanity, rookie.”

By sunset, they had accepted it. Being human was messy, confusing, and sometimes frustrating—but also exciting. For the first time, Camden and Sweetheart realized they could actually choose who they wanted to be, instead of whatever they had been before.

And maybe, just maybe, being human wasn’t the worst thing in the world.
