Part 2: The Enemy of My Enemy

The battlefield was still covered in vines and broken rocks.

Root and Destruction Man stood across from each other.

Neither moved.

Then—

CRACK!

A massive black crack split the ground between them.

Root jumped back.

“Okay… that’s definitely not me.”

Destruction Man stared into the crack.

“And that’s definitely not me either.”

Suddenly, a giant blast of black energy shot toward them.

BOOOOOOM!

Root immediately threw up a wall of roots.

Destruction Man jumped behind it.

The blast smashed into the wall.

Root looked over his shoulder.

“HEY! Why are you hiding behind MY shield?”

Destruction Man shrugged.

“Because it works.”

Root sighed.

“Fair enough.”

Another blast came flying toward them.

This time, Destruction Man punched it away.

BOOM!

Root stared at him.

“You know…”

Destruction Man looked back.

“What?”

“You destroy things.”

“And?”

“I grow things.”

They both looked at the giant black crack.

Root smiled.

“Maybe we should stop fighting each other.”

Destruction Man grinned.

“Finally. You figured it out.”

WHOOSH!

Root’s vines wrapped around Destruction Man’s arm.

Destruction Man charged forward.

Root launched him into the air like a slingshot.

KABOOM!

Destruction Man smashed through the black energy and landed beside Root.

“Again!”

Root nodded.

ROOT CANNON!

Massive vines launched Destruction Man forward.

DESTRUCTION PUNCH!

His fist exploded with energy, destroying the black creatures emerging from the crack.

For the first time…

Root and Destruction Man were fighting as a team.

But then the ground shook.

A shadow stepped out of the crack.

Root’s smile disappeared.

“Who’s that?”

Destruction Man clenched his fist.

“Dr. Null Vector.”

The doctor laughed.

“You two teamed up much sooner than I expected.”

Root stepped forward.

“You planned our fight?”

“Of course.”

Destruction Man looked at Root.

“So he wanted us fighting each other.”

Root nodded.

“Which means we’re ruining his plan.”

Dr. Null Vector’s smile vanished.

“Actually…”

He pressed a button.

The crack opened even wider.

“…you’ve just made my plan better.”

Behind him, something enormous began rising from underground.

Root stared upward.

“What is THAT?”

Destruction Man slowly raised his fists.

“I don’t know.”

Root’s vines surrounded him.

“But we’re about to find out.”

The giant creature opened its eyes.

BOOOOOOM!

Root and Destruction Man stood back-to-back.

Root grinned.

“Partners?”

Destruction Man smiled.

“Partners.”
